Manja Meister studied German, psychology and anglistics in Leipzig and graduated as scientific documentarist. Before the founding of the defa-spektrum GmbH she was resposable for the Contempory Witnesses' Archives at the DEFA-Foundation.

Dorothée Basel has a diploma in media studies and anglistics and was worked as a fil critic and distributor. Before coming to defa-spektrum she was project coordinato at the French Embassy's Bureau du Cinema were she organised a.o. the French Film Week.
